About the Wright Institute

The Wright Institute is an independent graduate school of psychology founded in 1968 in Berkeley, California. It has a doctoral program in clinical psychology and a masters program in counseling psychology.

About the WIRC

The WIRC is a community mental health clinic that trains doctoral students to provide psychotherapy to clients with co-occurring substance and mental health issues. The students treat mostly high-risk clients who have experienced severe and complex trauma, incarceration, lack of housing, and/or hospitalizations, as well as substance use disorders in either active use or recovery. The theoretical orientation is integrative, applying psychodynamic thinking, trauma-informed practices, social justice perspectives, and other approaches to the medical model. Treatments are informed by both 12-Step and Harm Reduction approaches as appropriate to the needs of the client. Students in their first year of doctoral training work within the Medi-Cal system, treat clients in individual therapy, and collaborate with substance use disorder counselors facilitating treatment groups at Options Recovery Services (Options). First-year trainees begin by developing a fundamental understanding of basic clinical skills and clinical assessment including diagnosis, mental status, clinical writing, and documentation. Students explore various treatment considerations and topics relevant to our population, gradually learning a more nuanced approach. The winter didactic seminar consists of a Chemical Dependency Seminar that meets Californias psychology licensure requirement.

Advanced students support the clinics operations in a variety of ways, including mentoring first-year students, teaching specific didactic sections, staffing the intake line, and performing pro bono psychological assessments for current WIRC clients. The advanced students assessment didactic seminar is taught by Dr. Hadas Pade, in partnership with the Wright Institute Assessment Services clinic.
