to First Responder Psychology




Explore the field of police and public safety psychology. Gain knowledge of cultural competence when working with dispatchers, medics, fire, and rescue personnel and learn a model of diversity within this special population. Learn the psychologist's role in the domains of Intervention, Assessment, Organizational Consultation and Operational Support.

The course is appropriate for practicing psychologists, as well as for other professionals working with first responders. Local and nationally recognized experts in each domain will be guest speakers.

OBJECTIVES


UNDERSTAND a psychologist's role in the domains of Intervention, Assessment, Organizational Consultation, and Operational Support, and the need for psychologists to earn credibility with first responders.

GAIN knowledge of cultural competence when working with dispatchers, medics, fire, and rescue personnel, and learn a model of diversity within this special population.

ARTICULATE the legal demands and ethical dilemmas unique to working with the first responder population and working as a First Responder Psychologist, and the aspects of first responder culture that are different from civilian culture.

DISCUSS the diverse roles of first responders in the context of the diverse communities they serve.

INSTRUCTORS


Teaching faculty are licensed psychologists who actively work with firefighters, EMTs, police officers, correctional officers, dispatchers, and their families. Guest speakers are recognized experts within the field.

MARK KAMENA, PhD, ABPP, MBA, M.Crim., is a licensed psychologist and board certified specialist in police and public service psychology. He has been an instructor at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA since 2017, when he helped start the first responder psychology program. Dr. Kamena is a co-founder, volunteer lead clinician and the director of research for the first responder support network, a residential treatment program for first responders (WCPR) and their significant others. He is a co-author (Kischman, Kamena & Fay) of Counseling Cops: What Clinicians Need to Know (2013, Guilford Press). Dr. Kamena is a past-President of the California Psychological Association and served as chair of the ethics committee for the psychology section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
