Barbara Hooks, MA, and Karen Davison, PsyD, Present at National Transgender Health Summit

Barbara Hooks, MA, a fourth year student, and Adjunct Faculty member Karen Davison, PsyD, presented Ms. Hooks dissertation research on transgender mental health treatment at the recent 2015 National Transgender Health Summit. The study explored "Mental Health Treatment Satisfaction and Best Practice Adherence: Does Clinician Adherence to Trans-Affirmative Best Practices Matter?" Sponsored by the UCSF Center of Excellence for Transgender Health, the Summit was held at the Oakland Marriott City Center on April 17, 2015.

Sherri Taylor Leads Panel Discussion at California Psychological Association

On April 25, 2015 Sherri Taylor, Psy.D. candidate, led and participated in a moderated panel workshop at the 2015 California Psychological Association.

The panel entitled, "Who?...Me? Psychologists as Policy Advocates & Practitioners for Social Justice" was a moderated discussion of the role of psychology in policy advocacy and exploration of personal and professional competencies necessary to be effective in this domain. Panelists included David Lechuga, Ph.D., Le Ondra Clark Harvey, Ph.D, and Dean Newman.

Newman and Kim Publish Report on Education Advocacy in California Psychologist Magazine

Dr. Gilbert Newman, Dean, and Dr. Anatasia Kim, Associate Professor, have published an article on "Fifteen Years Later...A Report from the Education Advocacy Front Line" in the Spring 2015 issue of California Psychologist magazine.

The article traces the origins of student involvement in organized psychology advocacy, the pressing shortage of APA accredited internships, and the effect of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010) on requirements for health care workforce qualifications. Newman and Kim also discuss the importance of educating and training doctoral students about legislative advocacy to advance the psychology profession and the communities it serves.

MA Alumna to Lead Panel Discussion

As part of Postpartum Support International's Social Support Webinar Series, MA alumna Natashia Fuksman will lead a panel discussion on Cultural Awareness for Caretakers within Maternal Health and Wellbeing. This is an event for all who work with women and their families during the perinatal time period in a supportive capacity. The discussion will take place at 11am on April 22.

Wright Alumnus Jack Daniels III, Madison College President, Profiled

Wright Institute alumnus Jack Daniels III, PhD, the current President of Madison College, was profiled in the Waunakee Tribune on April 15, 2015.

Daniels' education career includes serving as assistant director of research at Chicago State University, vice president of Academic Affairs at Grossmont College (San Diego), and president of Los Angeles Southwest College.

Kevin Nadal Speaks at the Wright Institute

On March 21st, 2015, Dr. Kevin Nadal facilitated a full day continuing education training on "Culturally Competent Services for Filipino Americans".

Dr. Nadal is an award-winning psychologist and professor; has authored over 60 publications on multicultural issues; and is currently president-elect of the Asian American Psychological Association.

Wright Institute students, faculty, supervisors, as well as members of the broader community participated in this seminar dedicated to enhancing clinical outreach and health services for Filipino Americans, who are currently the largest Asian American group in California.

Dr. Bernadette Torrez to Conduct Training on DSM-IV to the DSM-V

Full-time Master's faculty member Dr. Bernadette Torrez will give a training on May 7 at The Gathering Place: Alternative Family Services in Oakland.

The training, "The Revisions from the DSM-IV to the DSM-V," will focus on specific revisions, including diagnostic changes, the dimensional approach, and WHO's Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0.

Dr. Milena Esherick speaks to Kaiser's "Food is Medicine Healthy Eating Group"

On March 26, Master's Program Director Dr. Milena Esherick presented a webinar to the Kaiser Permanente "Food is Medicine Healthy Eating Group."

Over 170 clinicians from across Kaiser's national network participated in the webinar to learn how to help patients transition to a plant-based diet.

Dr. Esherick shared psychological strategies for motivating patients to make a successful shift to a plant-strong diet - a diet Kaiser endorses for its many health benefits.

Alexandra Lee to Participate in APA Spring Meeting on Psychoanalysis

Alexandra Lee, Wright Institute student, will participate in a conversation with former Wright Institute faculty member, Joan E. Sarnat, PhD, at the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) APA 35th Annual Spring Meeting. The meeting will take place at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on Thursday, April 23, at 9 a.m.

The discussion, entitled "Colloquy Close Analysis of an Excerpt from a Videotaped Supervisory Hour," is based on their taping of a new APA Psychotherapy Supervision DVD produced by Wright Institute faculty member, Hanna Levenson, PhD.

Lee and Dr. Sarnat will invite the audience to view a 15-minute excerpt from the videotape in order to identify what facilitates the transition from relational disconnection and "as if" teaching and learning, to connection and authentic teaching and learning.

The APA spring meeting, entitled "Life in Psychoanalysis in Life," will take place April 23 - 26, 2015,with pre-conference activities scheduled on April 22.
