Social Justice Fellowship

Program Overview:

The Social Justice Fellowship is a funded leadership opportunity for master’s students in the Counseling Program who are committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and systemic change in mental health care. Fellows receive up to $10,000 in annual financial support, which includes:

  • A $5,000 scholarship
  • Up to $5,000 in federal work-study funds (for eligible students)

This fellowship is designed to reduce financial barriers, support the success and retention of students from diverse backgrounds, and elevate student voice in shaping the future of the Counseling Program. Fellows receive faculty mentorship, training, a supportive community, and the opportunity to lead a year-long social justice project.

Fellowship components:

  • Faculty Mentorship – Bi-monthly meetings to support project development and professional growth
  • Project Work – Fellows design and implement a project that advances equity in mental health
  • Community Building – Monthly cohort meetings and a retreat focused on reflection, connection, and care
  • Professional Development Fund – $500 budget to attend trainings or conferences aligned with their work
  • Celebration & Presentation – End-of-year event where fellows share their project outcomes with the community

How to apply:

Applications for the Social Justice Fellowship open each spring and are open to two groups:

  • Prospective students who have applied to The Wright Institute’s Counseling Program
  • Current first-year Counseling students at The Wright Institute

The application is included in the Counseling Program admissions application for prospective students. Current students will receive a separate application link in the spring.

Fellows are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to social justice, leadership potential, and vision for advancing equity in mental health care. All selected fellows begin their term in the fall and serve for one academic year.
