Dr. Susan Maxwell holds a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley and graduated from the Wright Institute in 2011. She served as staff psychologist for a decade in the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center Posttraumatic Stress Disorders Clinical Team. In that role, she held a dual appointment as clinical professor with University of California San Francisco (UCSF). She specializes in helping people recover with trauma and works often with complex trauma, substance abuse, and dissociation. She has taught on different aspects of clinical mental health practice internationally in Lebanon and Liberia for EDC, an international nonprofit organization. Her impetus for entering the psychology profession came from volunteering in a refugee camp in Croatia after the war there. Currently, she has a private practice in Berkeley. She also brings to her teaching and clinical work training in somatics from the lens of biodynamic craniosacral therapy and her previous training as a modern dancer. She strives to deepen her understanding of how structural oppression impacts mental health and continues to learn from her clients about how healing happens.
